Itinerary
In the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Athens or a nearby location and begin our tour in the heart of the city! With the help of expert guides you will visit the most important sites in Athens in the morning, starting with the Panathenaic Stadium, the only stadium in the world constructed entirely out of marble and home to the first modern Olympic Games! You will then proceed through the heart of Athens, passing by the former Royal Palace which has been converted to the Prime Minister's residence and see the Evzones guards in their traditional uniform. On your way to the historical Acropolis you will see important monuments such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Hadrian's Arch, the Parliament and the Tomb to the Unknown Soldier. You will marvel at the neoclassical architecture of the Academy of Athens, the University and the National Library which grants an elegant touch in the midst of the metropolis. The main course for this part of the tour can be none other than Acropolis itself, one of the world's most recognized buildings and a symbol of democracy! Your guide will take you to the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and of course the Parthenon where millennia oh history come to life right before your eyes! Speaking of history, a visit to the modern Acropolis Museum, with its nearly 4,000 exhibits of Hellenism -including the original Karyatides- will shed more light into the inner workings and customs of ancient Athens.
After lunch at a traditional tavern you will take the coastal road out of Athens, enjoying stunning views of the Saronic Gulf along the way, and drive will you reach the very edge of the Attican peninsula, Sounion. There stands the Temple of Poseidon, which served as an observatory for approaching enemies. Alongside the Acropolis and the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina, it formed a triangle that kept ancient Athenians safe and solidified the naval prowess of the city-state. The Temple also features prominently in various stories of Greek mythology, with perhaps the most well-known being the tragic death of Aegeus, father of Theseus, who hoisted himself into the sea once he saw his son's ship approach with a black sail on its mast, wrongfully indicating that Theseus had been killed. You will tour the grounds, get vital information on the Temple's history and enjoy indescribable views offered by the vantage point before returning to Athens via the same route.
